How to Get a Dog to Like You
#1 Reason Why Dogs Are Aggressive Towards Strangers
Dogs that are aggressive toward strangers are usually this way because they are genetically predisposed to being suspicious of strangers or have not been properly socialized.
When dogs meet a stranger they feel uncomfortable with, they will want to increase the distance between themselves and the person.
In some cases, youโll see the dog flee between their humanโs legs. In other cases, they may exhibit aggressive behavior to make the person go away.
If your dog or a dog you know constantly barks at strangers and growls, they are likely asking for some distance. Respect that request, and give them some space!
What NOT to Do When Approaching Dogs for the First Time
If you find that dogs donโt like you, it may be because of your approach and body language.
The most common mistake is that people will loom over the dog, reach for the dogโs face, and make strong eye contact.
While you only had good intentions, these behaviors can often be misinterpreted by dogs as a threat, especially if they are nervous or aggressive dogs.
How to Approach Dogs For the First Time
If you want a dog to be your friend, greet them as a friendly dog would.
Hereโs how to approach a dog:
Start by standing still and perpendicular to the dog
Keep your hands to close to your body, and avoid reaching for the dog.
Avoid making strong eye contact or smiling at them if they choose to approach you.
Now wait! Let the dog come to you.
Keep your hands to yourself unless the dog makes it clear, by rubbing into you or turning their rear end towards you, that they would like to be pet.
IMPORTANT: Always ask permission to pet a dog! Not all dogs want to be pet, and some dogs are working service animals that are not to be pet.
Signs to Know If a Dog Likes You
There are many apparent signs to know if a dog likes you. Friendly dogs will be eager to interact with you, put their ears back, and be loose and wiggly.
Whatโs probably more challenging to recognize is when a dog does not like you.
When dogs lean away, show side eye, and furrow their brow all in combination, itโs very likely they are trying to tell you they do not feel comfortable.
If a dog begins to show these signs, step away and create some distance between you.
You know theyโll be ready to play again if and when they come back to you!
